RICHARDS FREE LIBRARY - NEWPORT, NEW HAMPSHIRE

Originally constructed in 1898 for the family of Col. Seth Mason Richards, it was considered one of the most elegant and costly homes in the state. Through the generosity of the Richards family, this house was donated to our town for conversion to a library in 1963.

Since 1956, Richards Free Library has annually presented the prestigious Sarah Josepha Hale award to a New England author who has made a significant contribution to American Literature. This award has been responsible for bringing to Newport such literary scholars as Robert Frost, John Kenneth Galbraith, Arthur Miller, and Michael Dorris, among others.

Richards Free Library is open on Mondays from 1-6pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am-8pm, Wednesday and Friday from 10am-6pm, and Saturday 10am-2pm.
