Young Curtis Shoup earned his Medal of Honor for heroism while
serving during W.W. II in Tillet, Belgium. He died during battle,
but not before taking out the enemy machine gun nest that had his
company pinned down taking heavy mortar and artillery fire. The
ground was too frozen to dig in for cover, so he bravely approached
the enemys' location and hurled a grenade that took out the enemies
machine guns, saving the lives of most of his company.
The North Scriba Union Cemetery has dedicated the area around
Curtis Shoups' grave with a memorial garden in his honor.
