History: Through the hard work of five caring individuals, the Animal Protection Association of Lima was incorporated on October 29,1937. Their purpose was "To promote the general welfare of dumb animals, to devise and execute means of securing for animals more kind and humane treatment." Since that time, the organization has been governed by a Board of Directors and acted as a not-for-profit agency. The name of the organization changed in 1965 and the Lima-Allen County Humane Society was incorporated.
The Society has built two shelters during its existence. The grand opening of the Seriff road shelter was celebrated in December 1979. The mortgage was paid off in only two years and the board of directors immediately began expansion plans. Those plans ultimately led to our current state-of-the-art shelter on Elida Road, which opened in May 2000. With that came another name change to The Humane Society of Allen County.
More changes came through work with the city of Lima. In 1972 the city contracted with the society to handle animal control within city limits. Three years later, the Allen County commissioners contracted with us to handle dog warden responsibilities. Animal control contracts with both the city and county were terminated in 1985 and in 2001 the society terminated the contract with Allen County to house stray dogs.
The recent changes serve to bring our shelter in compliance with laws that cover humane societies in Ohio. We strongly feel the need to maximize the available resources of the Society towards ending the overpopulation of homeless companion animals in Allen County. We will accomplish this through education, spay/neuter programs and innovative adoption education.
Services:
Receiving: In June 2004 the HSAC went from an open -admission facility to a limited-admission facility. This will affect the manner in which animals may be surrendered to the society. Animals will be readily accepted when vacancies exist. If there are no vacancies, the public will have their name, telephone number and a description of the animal listed with us. They will then be contacted as openings become available.
Adoptions: Applications are completed and an adoption counselor will review the application with the potential adopter. Consultation is designed to help us determine if the animal is compatible with your lifestyle. The adoption process may take 24-48 hours to complete. In order to adopt, you must be 18 years old, have everyone's consent in the household, receive permission from a landlord and be able & willing to invest time & money with your new companion!
Pet Population Control: Each year more than 15 million dogs and cats are euthanized in shelters in the US. Too many animals and not enough homes result in humane societies dealing with pet overpopulation. To demonstrate responsible ownership, we surgically sterilizes all animals adopted from the HSAC.
Pet Promotions/Education: Monthly television and radio spots keep our pets in the limelight but also heighten the public awareness about our services.
Cruelty Investigation: The Humane Society of Allen County's Humane Agent investigates allegations of animal cruelty, neglect, and mistreatment. Callers should gather as much information as possible before calling; including a correct street address. Callers are not required to disclose their name or contact number, although these are very useful should questions arise.
Owners of companion animals, such as dogs and cats, are required to provide their animals with adequate shelter from the elements, along with a fresh suplly of wholesome food and water. The Humane Agent will investigate claims of pet owners failing to meet these and other basic needs.
Boarding: Continuing with its commitment to the community, the HSAC will provide a safe haven for your pet in times of need. Assistance may be available for inpatient hospitalization and if a pet's life is in danger during family crisis. Certain guidelines and qualifications apply.
