I was on a ridge overlooking the Angus Barn, and I could see the restaurant's distinctive, historic, water tank. Suddenly, I caught a glimpse of a second tank, a little to the southeast of the familiar landmark. Finding it was tricky, because when you are close to the tank, you cannot see it. Trees block the view.
This elevated water vessel is supported by four legs, and has a central standpipe. It is painted dark brown. At the site, I saw two small brick structures which I recognized as wells. [See Gallery.] A third brick building houses control equipment. It has a horizontal "surge" tank on the northwest side.
I did considerable research using old deeds, surveys, and tax maps. However, I could not find anything which might give a clue to the tank's age. I noticed that there were fresh survey stakes along the road, and land was being cleared, nearby. The present owner has been combining parcels in the area (known as an "assemblage"), so it is possible that the land on which the tower sits may be developed.
To reach the tank from the Angus Barn entrance, go southeast on US-70/Glenwood Avenue about 0.2 mile to a power line crossing. Turn right onto a dirt road which runs along the transmission line. In about 250 feet, you will be able to see the water tank on the left. Continue another 150 feet and turn sharply left onto another dirt road, which leads to the tank.
I did not see anyone around, but I was prepared to flash my real estate license to justify being on the property. If you go, keep in mind that this is private property.
