Stone near a dam in a canal states, "Near this site in 1733 was built the first sawmill and dam in Townsend."

This stone is near the intersection of Main Street (Rte 119) and South Street, in a village called Townsend Harbor. To the right (west) of this stone is the Townsend Historical Society. Behind it, in the picture is 'The Cooperage', formerly used as a sawmill, a fulling mill, and a cooperage (barrel-making operation). Nearby is 'The Grist Mill' which is operated as a museum by the historical society (presently closed).
