The coordinates given are for the south entrance, approaching via Rt. 41 from Oakhurst CA.

Although not designated a National Park at the time, in 1864 Yosemite was the first park set aside by the federal government as an public trust. National Park status came in 1890. The park is now one of the most popular in the National Park system.

The nearly 1200 square miles of Yosemite is mostly wilderness. Visitors usually see only the spectacular scenery of the Yosemite valley with its massive cliffs and high waterfalls. The park is open year round although some roads are closed during winter. Several hotels, visitor centers and museums are located within the park and details for visits are available on the park website listed below.
