Long Description:
The Customhouse was designed by James Knox Taylor, Supervising Architect of the Treasury Department, and completed in 1911. Following the City Beautiful movement, Taylor used a massive, Beaux-Arts classical design to create the Federal presence in Houston, complete with Ionic columns. The building originally held a post office, the federal courts, and the custom offices. The federal courts moved to the Bob Casey Federal Courthouse on Rusk Street in the 1950s, and the post office to new facilities on Franklin Street a few years later.
