St Augustine's Catholic Church, a Gothic Revival Italianate style structure, was built in 1866 to serve the boom mining town of Austin. It was constructed with brick fired locally. For the first service on Christmas Eve in 1866, $1 admission was charged, supposedly to limit the number of persons attending to the capacity of the building. However, this may have been a fund raiser to complete the roof.
The population of the town has dwindled from over 10,00 to a few hundred but the old church, now on the National Historic Register, remains. It is the oldest Catholic Church still standing in Nevada
Services are no longer held here and the church has been sold to a private developer. Restoration as a community center and new fundraising activities are under way. The church contains significant features including murals, marbling, painted flooring and a 19th century pipe organ which is still in place.
