Financier of the Revolution. Came to America ca. 1772. Imprisoned by British, 1776 and 1778. Lived in Philadelphia, 1778-85; active in its Jewish community. A broker, he lent money heavily to support the war. Never repaid, he himself died in debt.
From Encarta:
Haym Salomon (1740-1785), American financier and patriot, born in Lissa (now Leszno), Poland, of Portuguese-Jewish descent. He arrived in America about 1772, and established himself in New York City as a merchant and broker. He associated himself with the cause of independence in the American Revolution and was twice imprisoned by the British. In 1778, he escaped to Philadelphia, where he became a successful broker and an agent of the American patriot Robert Morris, the financier of the Revolution. Salomon helped to negotiate subsidies from foreign governments for the conduct of the war and made substantial personal loans to the U.S. government. These loans were never repaid, and the question of suitable compensation to Salomon's descendants was brought before the U.S. Congress several times, but without results.
May God bless Haym Solomon since the U.S. Congress never has.
