The Mariposa county Courthouse is the oldest Courthouse west of the Rockies, still in continuous operation. The building was constructed in 1854 and the clock tower was added in 1866. The four faced clock was made in England and it is still hand wound by cranking two weighted cables onto separate drums. The tower contains a 267 pound bell, which was shipped from the east around Cape Horn.
Both clock and bell are still functioning perfectly.
