Austin Nevada was a silver mining boom town, reaching a population of 10,000, a few years after the first mines were opened in 1862. The county seat of Lander County was moved to Austin in 1863 and the red brick courthouse was constructed in 1869. After mines failed in the early 1880s the population of Austin dwindled but the county seat remained here until moved to Battle Mountain in 1979.
The building still houses a number of local and community offices and services.
