The chapel was originally located at
Oahe Mission about 5 miles up river at
Peoria Flats. It was relocated with the
building of Oahe Dam to its present
location on SD Highway 1804. The
construction lumber was hauled by
steamboat from Sioux City, Iowa. The
Chapel was used as both a school and
a church. Oahe Mission was the home
of Stephen Return Riggs and his
descendants. Rev. Riggs was an early
Congregational missionary who served
the Indian lands west of the Missouri
River. The mission had a boarding school and a chapel. The teachers taught reading and writing in the Lakota language. Church services were held in the chapel. It was later moved to the Oahe Dam. It is still standing there. The rest of the buildings are under the waters of Lake Oahe.Nondenominational Sunday
services are held at 8:00 A.M., Memorial
Day through Labor Day.
