Work on this fort in began 1756 as a result of the outbreak of the French & Indian War. There were no battles at Fort Frederick during the war, but it served as a supply base for English operations to the west.
During the Revolutionary War, Fort Frederick served as a prison camp - holding captured British troops. At the close of the war, the fort was sold into private hands.
Fort Frederick also saw action during the Civil War - Union infantry was stationed there, & Confederates unsuccessfully attemped to take the fort.
The State of Maryland purchased the fort & land in 1922 with plans to create a park. Restoration continued through the rest of the century & the fort now appears as it would have in the 1750's.
