The Howard School of Warrensburg, MO is the second oldest African-American school in Missouri. The current building is the second school built on the site, the first school was built in 1867 as a result of the newly created Freedman's Bureau. This building was constructed 1888 and served as the only school for African-Americans in Warrensburg until 1948 when it was closed because of low attendance. The African-American students were then bused to Sedalia's Hubbard School until 1955 when segregation ended. When the school district no longer needed the school it was sold to the Jesus Saves Pentecostal Church of God. This is when the cross was added. The school is slowly undergoing renovations with hope of converting it to a museum. The school has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
