This monument was presented to Portugal by the people of Natal, South Africa, to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Vasco da Gama who discovered Natal on Christmas Day, 1497.

The momument stands near to the gallery of the Dom Manuel Palace where, according to some chroniclers, in 1497, Vasco da Gama was given the command of the squadron he would lead on his maritime adventure to India.
