The Memorial is a 1/2 arc of columns with an obelisk at it's center. There are no words except for "Sacramento Sheriff" and "Sacramento Police" carved into the top of the arc. Around the obelisk are short columns with badges on top of them. The badges contain the names, badge numbers, date of birth, date of hire and date of death of those officers who gave the ultimate gift to the community. A few of those badges are included...brief histories are: Jeff Mitchell - died on a routine traffic stop in a rural part of Sacramento County. His killer has yet to be caught or identified. Sandra Larson - died in a traffic accident while transporting prisoners. Her partner was severely injured and was brought to the funeral in a hospital bed by ambulance. She left a husband and 2 teenage children. Kevin Blount and Joe Kievernagel - died while flying the Sheriff's helicopter searching for a fleeing felon. The helicopter malfunctioned sending them falling into a deep gorge above Natomas Lake. A third member of the crew survived, barely, and is still recovering from his injuries. There are way too many others. A ceremony, including a motorcycle run, is held annually about the end of July. It starts from the memorial and goes to the Gold Country. Come join a moving memorial ceremony that usually includes thousands of bikes paying tribute to these brave souls. The photos include a few I've taken with the Peace Officers Memorial Travel Bug .
