Gatlinburg, Tennessee, located in the valley of the Little Pigeon River’s West Fork, is surrounded on three sides by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The town was settled as a farming community in 1807. The town would remain virtually unchanged as a farming community until the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park during the 1930's. At that time, the need to accomodate the increasing number of visitors to the newly formed park spurred the growth of the town's tourism industry. Today, Gatlinburg serves as a popular tourist destination and year-round resort community truly earning its reputation as the "Gateway to the Smokies."
