Avenel was built between 1836-1838 and was the focal point of a 200-acre plantation owned by William and Frances Burwell. Avenel is a two-story brick house that was built on a small hill that once overlooked the town of Liberty, (present day Bedford, Virginia.)
William M. Burwell was the son of William A. Burwell, who was secretary to Thomas Jefferson and an early U. S. Congressman. In 1838 William M. Burwell was elected to the Virginia House of Delegate and secured the charter of the first railroad in Central Virginia.
Avenel remained in the Burwell Family until 1906, when it was purchased by J. W. Ballard. The Ballard family owned the property until 1985 when it was purchased by the non-profit Avenel Foundation who today makes the property available for tours and other functions by appointment only. Over the years Avenel has entertained many distinguished visitors, including General Robert E. Lee, and Edgar Allen Poe.
For tour appointments, visitors should contact the Avenel Foundation at 540-586-1814.
