New Prospect Church - Bedford, Virginia - This Old Church on Waymarking.com

New Prospect Church is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of rural northwestern Bedford County, Virginia, on an acre of ground 3.5 miles from the Peaks of Otter. This well-preserved white wood-framed structure sits on a small hill overlooking Sheep Creek, which was once known as Ewing's Creek. The original church building was built in 1854 on and consisted on a simple log structure. This structure had a balcony that was specifically use for segregating the slaves from the rest of the congregation. This original log structure has long since been destroyed and all evidence of the building is long gone.

The present church building was built in 1880 and is about 35-feet wide and 45-feet long, and has a 13-foot ceiling. This building was originally built as a Baptist Church and has two entrances, one for the men of the congregation and one for the women and children. This suggests a connection to the Puritan and Amish building, which were common during the 1800’s.

The New Prospect Church looks today much like it did when it was completed in 1880. The only major alterations to the building occurred in the early 1900’s when the interior walls were plastered and electricity was added to the building in 1948.

The New Prospect Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000 and is also a Virginia Historic Landmark.
