Funding for the Howe Field Gates & Soldiers Memorial was from several sources including the Works Projects Administration and UO classes of 1918,1919,1930 and 1935. Additional funds came from the Soldiers' Memorial Fund, and the Associated Students of the University of Oregon.

Howe Field was built in 1936 for baseball and was converted in 1987 for use as a softball field.
