Sam Houston was born March 2, 1793 in Rockridge County, Virginia. He served in the US Army, practiced law in Tennessee, served as a congressman, and served as governor of Tennessee. He then became Major General of the Texas Army and led the Texas Army to victory at the Battle of San Jacinto. He was elected and served as President of the Republic of Texas. After Texas became a State, he was elected to the U.S. Senate and later was elected Governor of Texas.
Sam Houston died July 26, 1863 near Huntsville, Texas.
