The Harding Memorial is one of Marion, Ohio's best known landmarks. Built in 1927, this is the last of the more elaborate presidential burials. After Harding's memorial was built following Presidents have opted for more subtle burials.
The memorial stands over 50 feet tall and 103 feet in diameter. It is designed to resemble a Greek temple, and has 46 Doric columns. In side the memorial are the graves of Warren G Harding and his wife Florence. Warren passed away August 2, 1923 at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco, he was born November 2, 1865 near Blooming Grove, Ohio. Florence was born in Marion, Ohio on August 16, 1860, and passed on November 24, 1924.
Groundbreaking for the Harding Memorial started in 1926, and construction was completed in 1927. From the time of their passing, until the memorial was completed, the Harding's were interred across the street in Marion Cemetery. Due to scandals during Harding's presidency, most wanted to distance themselves from Harding so they didn't want to be involved with the dedication. Herbert Hoover finally held the dedication on June 16, 1931.
