This is the site where the infamous Arkansas Governor Orval E. Faubus tried to use National Guard troops to stop nine black students from entering a previously all-white school.
The old park visitor center was in a restored Mobil gas station across Park Street from the school and would have been easy to miss without knowing what you are looking for. The new visitor center is still a little subdued so as not to detract from the neighborhood and the school, but is easier to find.
The much larger new visitor center is across Dasiy L Gatson-Bates Drive (used to be 14th street) from one in the photo. It opened in September of 2007, in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the school integration that made the school famous. (Coordinates are for the new stamping station.)
The school is still an active part of the Little Rock School District, and is one of the premire schools in the district, so watch out for students during the school year.
