The John Cabot House is one of the first brick structures built in Beverly. It was home to merchant ship-owner John Cabot from 1781 to 1802. During that period, the Cabot family was the most important family in the Beverly community, active in political affairs, maritime commerce, privateering and banking.
In 1802 the building became the first office of the newly formed Beverly Bank, the tenth oldest bank in America. John Cabot was one of its seven original directors.
The building is currently home to the Beverly Historical Society. Besides period rooms, the Cabot House now features maritime, military and children's exhibits as well as major changing exhibits.
It is included in the Essex National Heritage Area administered by the National Park Service.
