The Brownlee School was one of the earliest schools in Saline County. The land the school was built on was donated by Andrew Brownlee, a large landowner in the the area. The teacher's salary by Dr. John Sappington, a pioneer physician, known for perfecting the use of quinine for the treatment of malaria. The first building was made of logs in the early 19th century. The present building was constructed in 1933 and operated until 1953.
