The Union Canal connected the Schuykill River at Reading with the Susquehana River at Middletown. It began operations in 1822, with the Union Canal Tunnel outside of Lebanon completing the canal in 1828. The canal contained 100 lift locks, buildings, machinery, and pumps, all of which had a cost of more than $6,000,000. The peak year of operation was 1854. In 1884, the directors were forced to sell the Union Canal enterprise at a sheriff's sale in Philadelphia.
The remains of the Union Canal are just north of Hershey and this marker, in the town of Union Deposit.
