This wooden structure was build around 1900. It has been converted to business use. On the date of my visit, additional renovation was taking place, making it difficult to get a decent photo of the structure.
There still are tracks beside the depot. These are used by a family-owned railroad. The sole purpose of this railroad is to transport coal to the University of North Carolina, for use in the UNC boiler. This railroad has been written about in Our State Magazine and other publications. It’s said that the crew stops the train at a well-known bar-b-que restaurant where the tracks go underneath I-40. After lunch, they resume their run. Obviously, owning your own railroad has advantages!
At the site:
Several pieces of rolling stock which have been converted for business use. The Old Carrboro Mill shopping center is just to the west, and shares the parking lot. Numerous restaurants and pubs immediately east of the depot, along Main Street.
