Elvis Aaron Presley was born on January 8, 1935 at around 4:13 a.m. in a two-room shotgun house in East Tupelo, Mississippi to Vernon Elvis Presley and Gladys Love Smith. His twin brother, Jesse Garon Presley, was stillborn, thus leaving him to grow up as an only child.

Elvis and his family left Tupelo in 1948 and moved to Memphis where the young Elvis was deeply influenced the Memphis sound known as “The Blues.” A few years later Elvis recorded first of two double-sided demos acetates at Sun Studios in downtown Memphis. These early recording attracted the attention of Sun Records founder Sam Phillips and Grand Ole Opry Star Hank Snow. Snow arranged to have Elvis perform on the Grand Ole Opry and dispite being well received by the fans, Opry staff were not impressed and suggested that he pursue other opportunities.

Hank Snow continued to promote the budding singer and eventually signed him to a contract and eventually turned full control over to “Colonel” Tom Parker. Under Parker’s direction Elvis Presley grew to become one of the greatest recording artist ever, playing to sold out audiences wherever he appeared.

In 1957, Elvis purchase Graceland, a mansion on the south side of Memphis and lived there for the next 20-years. On August 16, 1977, Elvis died in an upstairs bedroom at Graceland; he death was mourned by million world wide.
