Originally built in 1871 as a swing bridge for the Wabash Railroad. The bridge was the only bridge crossing the Mississippi River at Hannibal until 1935 when the Mark Twain Memorial Bridge was opened for automobiles. The bridge was converted to a vertical lift bridge in 1994 to improve waterway clearance. The vertical lift span was moved from Florence, Alabama where it spanned the Tennessee River to its current location. The swing span was removed and new lift span placed in 17.5 hours and the bridge was operational within the allotted 3 day period. The bridge is currently owned and operated by the Norfolk Southern Railroad.
