On August 21, 1964 the Beatles gave their first concert in Washington state at the Seattle Coliseum. 14,300 screaming fans paid $5 each to attend. The stage was raised 12 feet for the fab four's protection. They began with"All My Lovin'," sung to thousands of girls who wished fervently for exactly that. They followed with"Twist and Shout,""You Can't Do That,""She Loves You,""Can't Buy Me Love,""If I Fell" and"I Wanna Hold Your Hand." Ringo Starr then sang a solo entitled"Boys," followed by "Roll Over Beethoven" and finally Paul McCartney's version of"Long Tall Sally."
The security recruited 100 Navy volunteers to help the police and firefighters keep the crowds under control. Even so, they still had difficulty and 35 girls required first aid treatment.
The Beatles escaped the venue by hiding in an ambulance, although later that night Paul is said to have made a date with a Seattleite and taken her to dinner at the Space Needle that evening. The next afternoon the group flew to Vancouver, B.C. for their next concert.
The Seattle Center Coliseum was designed by local architect, Paul Thiry for the 1962 Seattle World's Fair as the Washington State Pavilion. It is currently home to the Seattle Supersonics and the Seattle Storm, although both teams have been purchased by an Oklahoma man and their tenure in the Seattle area seems unlikely.
