"The town's first church was located in the citadel. The priest complained that the establishment of the first church meant that worship was "subject to the noise of the soldiers and their swearing, which happens during the holy sacrifice of the Mass." Consideration was given to building a new church in the town in 1721. The construction of the church was due to the personal intervention of the king.
Construction of the church inside the town began in 1733 and continued until 1737, according to the plans of the engineer Delisle de Salins, who copied those of the first church located in the citadel. Although built in the 18th century, it is in a 17th-century style. The construction of the church cost 32,866 livres. The abbot of Saint-Michel de Cuxa provided the wood from the Matte forest, owned by the abbey. This building is characterized by the massive architecture of the military engineering of the time."
