"Mammoth Mountain Ski Area is a popular ski resort in eastern California, situated on the east side of the Sierra Nevada within the Inyo National Forest. Located in the town of Mammoth Lakes, the resort spans 3,500 acres of skiable terrain, with a vertical drop of 3,100 feet and a summit elevation of 11,059 feet. It receives an average of 400 inches of snowfall annually, allowing for a ski season that typically runs from November through May, and occasionally into the summer.
Founded by Dave McCoy in the 1940s, Mammoth Mountain grew from a modest ski area into a major resort after obtaining a U.S. Forest Service permit in 1953 and building its first ski lift in 1955. The resort expanded significantly in the 1990s with investment from Intrawest Corporation, which led to the development of The Village at Mammoth. In 2005, McCoy sold his majority stake to Starwood Capital Group, sparking further modernization including high-speed lifts and a gondola. In 2017, ownership transitioned to Alterra Mountain Company, a partnership formed by Aspen Skiing Company and KSL Capital Partners.
Despite its growth and popularity, the resort faced tragedy in April 2006 when three ski patrol members died after falling into a volcanic fumarole during a safety operation near the summit." (
