The Ben Nevis Distillery, founded in 1825, is located in the Scottish town of Fort William, right at the foot of Ben Nevis – the highest mountain in the United Kingdom. This location not only gives the distillery its name but also contributes to the unique character of its whisky. The water used in production comes from the Allt a’Mhuilinn spring, which flows down from the mountain and is considered one of the purest in Scotland.

The real growth of the distillery began under John McDonald, known as Long John, who took over in 1831. Thanks to his height, charisma, and entrepreneurial spirit, he became a legend. His whisky gained popularity not only among common folk but also within British aristocracy – it was even reportedly sent to the royal court. After his death in 1856, his son Donald continued the family tradition and expanded production further.

Ben Nevis produces whisky with a rich character, often featuring notes of chocolate, vanilla, dried fruit, and a slightly oily texture. Among its most well-known products is the Ben Nevis 10 Year Old, offering a spicy aroma with hints of orange and coffee, and the Macdonald’s Traditional Ben Nevis, which is smokier and more robust. The distillery also produces blends such as the Nevis Dew 12 Year Old Deluxe Blend and the stronger Glencoe 8 Year Old Vatted Malt, with an alcohol content of 58%.

In 1991, a visitor center was opened in a historic warehouse dating back to 1862. It offers guided tours with tastings and an introductory film that acquaints visitors with the history and production process of this exceptional distillery.
