EN: "THE BATTLE OF BERGEN HARBOUR
(On 2 August 1665 (Julian calendar), an Englisih naval force attempted to capture a large fleet of Dutch cargo ships that had sought refoge in the neutral port of Bergen. Among the ships was the rich East India fleet from the Dutch colony of Batavia, in present-day Indonesia, loaded with spices, ivory and diamonds purchased with 36 tons of gold.
The Danish Norwegian King Frederik III had approved the capture, in order to share the booty with King Charles III of England. The agreement between the two kings did not teach Bergen in time from Copenhagen. Bergenhus Fortress therefore had no other choice than to defend Bergen's neutrality. The fortress opened fire on the English fleet which was forced to withdraw with great losses: This is the only cime Bergenhus Fortress has been engaged in a battle."
