George Mackay Brown, OBE was born in Orkney on 17th October 1921 and died on the 13th April 1996.
He suffered from tuberculosis as a young man so he didn't enter university until he was 34. After he finished his degree and then his post graduate studies he rarely left Stromness, a travelling award took him to Ireland in 1968 and he occasionaly visited England but that was the extent of his travels. Despite this his works have been published far and wide and he has been translated into French, German, Finnish, Italian, Norwegian, Swedish, Polish, Czech and Hebrew. He was awarded many literary prizes and a few honorary degrees as well as being a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
