According to the historic plaque and the signboard on the chain link fence, the Oregon (Oswego) Iron Company Furnace was the FIRST iron furnace on the West Coast. Its debut in 1867 was hailed as a “cause for sincere rejoicing” by newspapers in Portland and San Francisco. During its many years of operation, three different companies owned the furnace: the Oregon Iron Company (1865-1878), the Oswego Iron Company (1878-1882), and the Oregon Iron & Steel Company (1882-1928). The furnace was replaced in 1888 by a new ironclad furnace located a half a mile north at Oswego Pointe. The iron company was Oregon’s largest industrial enterprise in the 19th century, eventually employing 325 workers.Instructions for logging waymark: A photograph is required of you (or your GPS receiver, if you are waymarking solo) and the place.
