This fortress was built by the Ottomans in the late 19th Century and nowadays is a museum (sorts of) open to the public. By the entrance there is a panel with the history of the place, presented in Kurdish, Arabic and English.

"It is located north west of koya city. Is located (79 km) east of Erbil City There is a debate about its period:
Some believe it dates back to the mamluk era while others say it belongs to the second half of the nineteenth century during the dynasty of midhet pasha (1869 - 1872 AD) who ruled Bagdad it was used as a military barracks in the ottoman period. the site is situated 7000 meters on a top of a hill and east of the main road. the drop is deep and makes a good defense line. In some parts, this gishla is composed of two floors.
Today it the koya civilization museum, art gallery and the koya directorate of antiquities.
This qishla has been renovated two times in 2004 and 2009.
