The Arab neighborhood, located in the center of Erbil is an area of historical significance, but it has been overlooked by the authorities. The existence of the Citadel, right by its side, is one of the factors of the decadence of the area. Being an UNESCO World Heritage Site the citadel has been attracting all the attention and available funds, while the Arab neighborhood sees an increased decay.
There are more factors involved, like the policies leading to an attempted Arabization of Kurdistan during the Saddam era, naturally reverted after the fall of the dictator.
Nowadays the Arab neighborhood is almost eerie. There are still many families living there but the number of abandoned houses is high.
