Fairmont's Civil War monument is located in the city park, next to the former Fairmont Creamery building which now houses the Fillmore County Museum. It features a bronze statue of a union soldier atop a granite pedestal. The monument was restored in 2001 by Vern Friesen, artist, rancher and farmer, of Henderson, Nebraska, who also designed and sculpted the Sutton Civil War monument. An inscription at the front base of the pedestal reads "Restored in 2001 in Honor of All Who Have Served".
The front of the pedestal displays a worn bronze logo of the Grand Army of the Republic. The inscription on the south side is "To Our Patriotic Dead 1861-1865" The north side inscription is "In Memory of Our Unknown Dead".
