Bizeljsko Castle is one of the characteristic sights of the region along the Sotla River. The building, which is assumed to have its roots in the Romanesque period, was first explicitly mentioned in historical sources in 1404. Among the owners we can highlight the Tattenbach family, and after 1858 the Windischgrätz princes, who owned it until its nationalization after the end of World War II. Like most castles in Slovenia, it was built gradually, and its current appearance is the result of numerous reconstructions and additions.
The current appearance with its two towers and inner arcaded courtyard is typically Renaissance. The castle building stands on the top of a hill, with the associated outbuildings below it. The path to the castle is already one of the first features, as it winds around the hill and gradually leads us through the entrance tower into the castle courtyard. At the entrance, in the extension, there is the chapel of St. Hieronima, which was decorated in 1623, with stucco on the ceiling and a beautiful Baroque altar. The two-story building is partly basement. From the living rooms, which are arranged on the first floor, wonderful views open up to the wine-growing landscape, the settlement of Orešje and further on to the Croatian Zagorje region.
Even more often, visitors' eyes stop at the very rich stucco decoration, which can be found in three rooms and also inside the chapel. It dates back to the 1730s. The very word stucco directs us to the richly decorated interiors of mansions and castles, and although stucco was initially used as a cheaper substitute for stone, it later became widely used due to its relatively easy-to-manage material. The ingredients of stucco are usually gypsum, sand, lime and water, and the ornaments created by the masters represent various plant motifs as well as various figures – in the case of Bizeljsko, these are angels who playfully reveal the inner fields of decoration. Among the motifs we also find seven liberal arts. All elements are well worth our time and attention.
