The 'then' photo was taken in 1942 by Willian Boehmer. It shows the Red Barn shortly after construction in 1941. It was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps - Indian Division as part of the WPA projects that were being undertaken in the recently formed Brighton Reservation.
The Red Barn was the staging area and starting location for the Seminole Tribe's cattle operations. Today the Brighton Reservation, Seminole Tribe of Florida cattle operation is the 12th largest in the United States.
The 'then' photo shows how the Red Barn was situated in a wooded area with numerous Sabal Palm trees and fencing. The original site also had a water tower, two concrete water troughs, and a smaller pole barn where woodwork was housed to build cow pens.
Today the area around the barn has been cleared and is open except for an oak tree that has grown in front of the barn somewhat obstructing it. The difference in landscapes between then and now is quite significant. The barn is no longer used to cattle operations but is still used for cultural and educational events. It was listed on the National Register of Historic places in 2008.
