Located just south of Lakeport, Florida off of State Road 78 is the Fisheating Creek Wildlife Management Area (WMA). Along the road going to the parking area for the WMA there are several animal crossing signs signifying some of the local fauna that you may encounter on the road.
This sign is for the Crested Caracara. The Crested Caracara is also known as the Mexican Eagle and is a bird of prey in the falcon family. The caracara is found in Central and South America with a small population in the Lake Okeechobee area of Florida. Besides being a raptor it is also a scavenger primarily feeding on the carcasses of dead animals. Adult birds can be as much as 26 inches in height and have a wingspan of up to 52 inches. Mostly seen on the ground walking around the caracara has some distinct markings including its orange legs and beak area and its crested crown. It is usually a solitary bird but is sometimes observed with vultures.
