Tanjung Aru Railway Station: A Modern Transport Hub
Tanjung Aru Railway Station (Stesen Keretapi Tanjung Aru) is the primary railway station in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia.
Located approximately 5 kilometres south of Kota Kinabalu city centre, it serves as the terminus of the
Western Sabah Railway Line and is a crucial link between the state capital and towns along the west coast,
including Papar, Beaufort, and Tenom.
The station plays a key role in providing both commuter and tourist rail services under the
Sabah State Railway Department (JKNS).
The original Tanjung Aru station dates back to the early 20th century, part of the North Borneo Railway,
which started operations in 1914. However, the old wooden station was replaced with a modern structure, officially reopening on
21 February 2011 after significant renovations. Today, the station boasts contemporary infrastructure designed
to meet the needs of both daily commuters and visitors.
The current Tanjung Aru Railway Station is a well-equipped transportation hub with several key features.
The station has multiple platforms, with one exclusively dedicated to the North Borneo Railway,
a heritage steam train service for tourists. The facility includes a comfortable waiting area, ticket counters, and digital displays
for train schedules. It also houses the headquarters of Sabah State Railway, overseeing operations across the line.
Designed with modern amenities, the station ensures easy access for passengers, including those with mobility challenges.
