This sign was located on the Trail of the Molten Land. In 2011, to meet current ADA requirements the Trail of the Molten Lands had to be rerouted and signs replaced. New signs were designed which are more colorful but in many cases less informative than they could have been.
Marker Name: Lava Levees
Marker Text: You are standing in the main channel or gutter that once carried fiery rivers of lava to the surrounding countryside. The high walls surrounding you are lava levees which were formed when enormous pulses of lava, often spurting 10 to 15 feet high, filled and overflowed this gutter. Each overflow added a new layer, gradually increasing the height of the levees. The layers are visible in these walls.
