This sign was located on the Trail of the Molten Land. In 2011, to meet current ADA requirements the Trail of the Molten Lands had to be rerouted and signs replaced. New signs were designed which are more colorful but in many cases less informative than they could have been.
Marker Name: The Breach
Marker Text: Lava began to flow here about 6,200 years ago. The rising magma had a high water content causing violent eruptions. Pieces of molten rock and cinders were hurled hundreds of feet into the air. The larger pieces fell back around the vent and the cinders piled up higher on the north side of the vent due to prevailing southwest winds. Lava Butte was thus created. Eventually the eruption became less explosive as the water content decreased and the lava breached out the thinner, south side of the butte.
