Humboldt, Kansas was founded in 1857 and named for Baron Von Humboldt. It was the birthplace of professional baseball players Walter (Big Train) Johnson, who played for the Washington Senators, and George Sweatt, who played for the Kansas City Monarchs.

More information and collections about both ball players can be found at the Humboldt Historical Museum. There are also ball diamonds named for each in town.
