This is the third Courthouse for Sabine County at this site. The first County Seat was Milam, a few miles to the north, and the center of county government moved to Hemphill in 1858. The first courthouse burned down in 1875 and was replaced by a larger frame structure. Construction on this stately Beaux-Arts courthouse began in 1906 and was completed by 1908. The top two floors were rebuilt after a 1909 fire, and remodeled again after yet another fire in 1938. This final work removed the original dome and was completed by the WPA. Several markers and monuments around the Courthouse provide additional details.
