The final mission of the United States Space Shuttle Columbia, STS-107, was launched on January 16, 2003. During launch the Shuttle suffered damage due to a piece of frozen foam striking the leading edge of the left wing at near-supersonic speed; this was never revealed to the crew. Upon re-entry on March 1, the Columbia disintegrated over Texas, resulting in the deaths of all seven astronauts on board. This plaque was given by NASA in appreciation for the State's efforts in recovering debris from the disaster. The brass plaque, which names the seven astronauts, is on a monument near the north entrance of the Sabine County Courthouse.
