The Old Church in the Perthshire village of Muthill was once a significant Christian site. By 1170 a community of Culdees was established here, linked to the Bishops of Dunblane. The Romanesque bell tower was built in the mid 1100s and was free standing, probably used as a lookout post, and shortly afterwards the Culdees left after a legal dispute over the parish church.

In the 1400s a church was built into eastward side of the tower, with outer walls, arcades, and chancel arch, with a further addition of a central pulpit to accommodate Protestant worship after the reformation in 1560.

In the 1820s the church was abandoned and later partially dismantled to provide building stone for new churches in the village. Only the lower walls remained, with the tower staying intact.

The ruins are now under the care of Historic Scotland and are easily visited from the roadside the centre of the village.
