" The Bois-Karre fortification is a fortified structure of the Maginot Line, located in the commune of Boust, in the Moselle department. It is a small, single-block infantry structure. Built from 1930, it was spared from the fighting of June 1940.
Position on the line
As part of the Hettange-Grande sub-sector in the fortified sector of Thionville, the Bois-Karre structure, bearing the code A 12, is integrated into the "main line of resistance" between the interval casemates of Boust (C 44) to the west and Basse-Parthe Ouest (C 45) to the east, within firing range of the guns of the large structures of Molvange (A 9), Soetrich (A 11), Kobenbusch (A 13), Galgenberg (A 15) and Métrich (A 17).
Description
The single-block structure consists of two firing chambers and a machine gun turret.
The firing chamber flanking to the west has a mixed slot for JM/AC 47 (twinning of machine guns and 47 mm anti-tank gun) and a slot for twinning of machine guns alone.
The firing chamber flanking to the east is equipped with two mixed slots (offset) for twinning of machine guns and 47 mm anti-tank gun and a slot for twinning of machine guns alone.
The structure is topped by a machine gun turret and four GFM bells (machine gun spotter) one of which served as an observatory with periscope, tactically attached to the large structure of Métrich (the 4th bell is a fake one located below the structure).
The small Bois-Karre factory is equipped with two 40 horsepower Renault generators. It is the only structure that was equipped with two 40 hp Renault engines.
Crew
The structure had a theoretical crew of 91 men from the 168th RIF, under the command of Lieutenant Jumel and his deputy, Second Lieutenant Boulay.
Current state
The structure, which still has a large part of its equipment, is restored by the association "Ligne Maginot de Cattenom et environs" which offers tours.
The two engines are in working order as well as the two 50 kVA 220 V generators. The restoration of engine no. 1 required replacing the engine block with a 50 hp one recovered from the small structure of Hobling. The machine gun turret works electrically.
The entire structure and equipment are repainted. Copies of frescoes are reproduced in the structure. The waterproofing of the sky slab is currently being repaired, that of the turret is finished "
